Travel casual and comfortable. No tie or sportcoat needed. Note that the weather can be variable, especially on the North Island--rain, wind, warm, cool. Good walking shoes are necessary.

I'd say good walking shoes would do it. And maybe throw in some sandals, depending on the time of year you'll be travelling, if you're feeling reckless!

I agree with Jan, a good pair of walking shoes will be fine. Tennis shoes are fine too.
