Reading List - One Must Read, One to Avoid
Getting ready for the trip and read Sunlight at Midnight - an excellent survey of the history of St. Petersburg and well worth working through a lot of previously unknown names of architects and writers. The city has both a glorious and tragic history and will be one highlight of the tour. On the other hand, Patrick O'Brian's Letter of Marque is a major disappointment in re the Baltic. Listed here, even a mention of the region is limited to the last 30-40 pages, and then only as a setting for the resolution with Dr. Maturin and his wife. To paraphrase Obi Wan Kenobi, "This isn't the book you are looking for" if you want a flavor of the Baltic before we leave.
