Is there a recommended zoom for photography of shoreline features, castles, etc. from riverboat?

  • There are always enthusiasts with huge lenses, but I took quite acceptable shots from the top deck with one of the larger digital, non-SLR cameras, a Sony Cybershot. I bought a new Canon for last year's trip ... and apart from the bigger zoom capacity, I really miss the old Sony! This new one keeps trying to do things on its own. Too scary!

  • You may want consider wide angle as well as telephoto capabilities of the camera you take. On board the ship, in cities with narrow streets, and for those lovely landscapes, wide angle will be appreciated.
  • We did this great trip in 2011 and I used a Nikon D90 with an 18 to 200 mm lens when on the boat, however when on tour I found a small point and shoot such as a Panasonic Lunix with a good quality lens with good optical digital capabilities worked best. It fits in your pocket, weighs nothing and gives comparable pictures to the Nikon .
