US Currency

I have seen multiple postings on money and most seem to indicate that US currency is accepted frequently. Exception appears to be in Taxis. Seems most people do not bother to get much local currency to avoid having to change it again as you move between countries. Appears that a small amount of local money is all that's needed and that can sometimes be done at the hotel or from an ATM. Expect the tour guides are helpful with these issues. Correct? Thanks
