Attire. for classic Italy small group

Looking for past travelers to offer advice on attire for evening meals. I'd prefer not to take up precious packing space with dressy clothes.

    Hello 5 Star,

Select a wardrobe that is adaptable and allows for layering; casual comfortable clothing is suggested for most occasions. For the Welcome Dinner and Farewell Dinner, you may enjoy dressing up a bit.

    Hope this helps,

Are shorts acceptable during the day? What about the after hours dinner at the Vatican?

    Hello Star 5,

Shorts are acceptable during the day, just be mindful of the day's activities. Most catholic churches in Italy require that your knees and shoulders be covered when you enter, even during the hot days of summer. This is particularly important when you visit St. Peter’s Basilica and the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican, where shorts and tank tops are not allowed.

The weather in Italy is temperate and unpredictable. We suggest that you dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is flexible and allows for layering. Casual, cotton clothing is recommended. A light sweater or jacket will provide warmth on a chilly early morning walk or a late night stroll; however, generally you will only need to dress for warm and delightful weather – and the occasional shower.

In Europe, especially in finer restaurants, it is generally customary to dress somewhat formally. Slacks or Dockers style pants or a dress for women and a jacket for men are acceptable dining attire but not required. It is advisable to avoid wearing jeans, sneakers or shorts for dinner.

    Hope this helps,
    Emily

We have taken 12 Tauck tours and enjoyed everyone. We are booked two this September. We enjoy getting dressed for Dinner. A sport jacket plus several dress shirts for the men. A sweater, umbrella is a must I enjoy dressing up for dinner & find black skirt or pants come in handy and several colored scarfs. Ray & Pat

We just returned from Classic Italy Small Group. Florence and Venice were in the mid 90s so be prepared. Val wore a dress for both the welcome and farewell dinners but nothing really fancy. Jack wore short sleeve sport shirts and no jacket. We found that most restaurants didn't require a jacket for men. We both wore mostly khaki slacks and either sport shirts or golf polos. Your farewell dinner is after a gondola ride so think about dress and shoes getting in and out of the boat!
