vacinations

Planning to take this trip in 2013 and wondering if the vacination for Yellow Fever is or is not required to enter Brazil. From what I can determine the visit to the Falls would be the issue. If anyone has any information to share on this subject, please reply. Thanks

Best bet is to check with a travel health specialist and look at CDC and State Dept sites. I went on this trip last year and ended up getting yellow fever shot although it was marginal whether it was needed or not. At that time, there were issues in areas around the Falls as you point out. But shot is good for 10 years so figured, what the heck. Don't think proof was required for entry.

I was advised by Tauck telecon that if one enters from the US no vaccinations are necessary. (We are on the 18 November version of the trip, so if we are turned away, will let you (and Tauck) know).

Thanks FairWinds. I have no reasonable objection to getting the shots but the cost just adds more expense to what is already a pretty pricey trip. The company that is handling our Visa applications advised that they were not needed. Very interested in your experience. Have a safe and enjoyable trip!

FYI decided to err on the side of caution and get the innoculation. Painless except for the cost and finding someone authorized to administer the shot. Sweet deal for the CDC authorized provider. The cost of the shot in the Chicagoland area is $143 to which you must add a doctors consultation fee. In our case $40. So for a total of $366 we now have peace of mind a protection from yellow fever for the next ten years!

I'm going in Feb. 2013 and opted for the shot. Was advised it was only recommended (not required) because of Iguazu Falls and even though we are not there for very long it only takes one bite from the wrong insect - Figured better safe than sorry - BTW, shot is New Jersey is $110 but visit to Hospital/Travel Center provider was $125 !

Heard from a fellow traveler today that yellow fever vaccination is required to enter from Argentina to Brazil, according to his travel clinic. We will enter Brazil from Argentina on Essence of South America. Is this correct, Tauck Expert?

We are on the October 3 tour. We saw our travel doctor yesterday and she said that according to her information from the CDC we need a yellow fever vaccination which we got yesterday also. Malaria medication is not needed. We also plan on getting a flu shot before we leave.

Did anyone over the age of 60 get the yellow fever vaccine?

I am 69 and my husband is 71, and we both got the shot. Absolutely no problem. By the way, we have Kaiser as our medical provider. Cost of travel clinic advice/review of our travel plans and the cost of the immunizations ?? Zero! I didn't realize it was such a deal until I read this thread of posts!

This may help folks planning on taking future South American tours in deciding what to do about vaccinations. First crossing from Argentina to Brazil at the falls, we were not asked to produce any proof that we had received any vaccinations. Second, when exploring the topic with people who we believed were knowledgeable on the subject, they thought that if travelers were going to get any vaccinations at all, they would have recommended Typhoid over Yellow Fever. So knowing what I know now, I doubt we would have received either although I can see the benefit of Typhoid over Yellow Fever.
