Polar Bear Adventure

We are contemplating taking this tour in 2012. We would love to hear comments from anyone that has gone on this trip.

  • Since no one has responded, we guess we will. We took this tour this year in November, and had a fantastic time. The Lazy Bear Lodge is outstanding with owner and host, Wally, and all of his staff. The "log cabin" ambiance of the Lazy Bear beats anything else in Churchill. And, there are hair dryers in the rooms, and Lazy Bear has wi-fi; a little at times, but fairly reliable. And, the food is delicious with a very varied menu.

A word of warning. Be prepared for the "cultural tour" of the Churchill area. Wally takes you out to see the sights, look for polar bears, and arctic animals but the short walk at Cape Merry could be chilly so be sure to have something that will be warm, and block the wind.

The Lazy Bear has its own Arctic Crawlers that are spacious and comfortable. There is a nice heater available, and a comfortable restroom onboard. The back deck has a grated deck, and we were able to take pictures of polar bears right through the floor. Viewing from the Crawler is excellent, and there was nothing hindering picture taking but ourselves. On our trip, we saw a number of polar bears, and we were able to observe them for some time. We took a "coffee break" the first morning, and a polar bear came up to visit us.

The dog sledding with Dave Davey and his animals was another outstanding feature of this trip. The weather cooperated so that we had a nice layer of snow to sled on.

Unfortunately, the weather during our trip to Churchill was overcast every night we were there, and we did not get a chance to observe the Aurora Borealis phenomenon. But, the Lazy Bear Lodge staff does maintain a list of those interested just in case the weather clears enough to see the Northern Lights.

Like all Tauck Tours, this is highly recommended. We originally wondered if two days on the tundra would be too short. But, we came away with the impression that it was just the right amount of days to be out looking for polar bears. Oh, and the meals on board the Crawlers are excellent.
