Have you seen this website

This is also useful and there is a link to a two hour walking tour of the city

We also met this interesting guy who gave a lecture on our recent non Tauck river cruise. He is quite a character and his talk was about when he was invited to Balmoral to preach for the Queen. He spent the weekend at Balmoral and rode with the Queen driving her old Land rover. He had discussions with Prince Philip for quite some time after his visit.
We have met Ian before in the US.

Thx British !! booking soon.
You can only walk the Old Course on Sundays in St. Andrews, when it is used as a park. All other days is active golf, and you cannot go on the course at all.
thx Marla526. the link British provided looks like the way to go, using a guided tour for 15 euros pp. This gets us around holes 1,17,18 and sneak a photo standing on Swilcan bridge (without bothering the golfers) . gets you a scorecard as well.
cumin GJ - I did what you're suggesting at the golf course for free. If you get to the course I think it is pretty easy to get shots without disturbing golfers.
thx for pix Smiling Sam !!
Nice pictures Smiling Sam !!
We are going on the trip in August also, wondering same thing, golfers both.
We just came back from this tour (review available) . We left Edinburgh on the coach at 8:30 and got to St Andrews at about 10:30 with a stop on the way at a lookout point for the three bridges that cross the forth. The group had the option of an Old Course guided tour or one of the town that included the castle, university and abbey. Time after for lunch and a bit of shopping. The golfers of the group were very happy with their tour. Back on the bus at 2.
I did St. Andrews on a trip to Scotland on my own. I believe that the day trip from Edinburgh from St. Andrews was a Rabbie's tour. I was fortunate to be there on one of the graduation days from the university. We were on our own for lunch, and at the recommendation of a cousin whose daughter graduated from St. Andrews (not that year), I went to Forgan's for lunch, which was hosting some graduates and their families. It was a lovely meal! If you go to St. Andrews, I recommend Forgan's for lunch.
