Packing Advise

We are heading out January for the Classic Safari, starting Jan 13th. Does anyone have advice on what clothes and other essentials to pack that maybe have not been recommended but found them good to have? The weather in January says it can go to 80 but also heard it can be cold. I am typically a over packer but understand the limitations and duffle bag criteria. So with all of that being said, any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Also, is anyone else coming along on the same trip :)

Keep in mind, while where you are going is close to the equator, much of it is at higher altitude which tempers the heat and can make it just warm to slightly hot during the day (it rarely gets extremely hot like Egypt) and it cools down in the evenings and can be quite cool in the early mornings during the first game drive of the day. Wear safari type clothes, that blend with the environment (and your fellow travelers :D ) but be prepared for some layering. Check WeatherSpark dot com to see daily temps when you will be going. Avoid dark blue and black which supposedly attract biting tsetse flies. There is no need for fancy clothes, you will often get back to camp late and wear what you have on to dinner or switch to the next days safari attire just before. Also, some of the camps have free or inexpensive laundry service.

  • I agree with Alan also. We use the duffle (old style) as one piece of carry on, and use a wheeled carry on to use as a ‘cart’. We pack everything we “need” in the carry ons. You need three sets of safari clothes … one to wear, one for tomorrow, and one in the wash. We wear safari clothes on the plane, just to meke sure that we don’t end up in Africa with clothing that is totally inappropriate. There are always people in the group who have that happen, and they are pretty uncomfortable for several days. We also check one bag with the liquids, but seldom use anything else packed in that bag. We also have light down jackets, stocking caps, and gloves. Many are surprised at how cold it can be in the morning.

  • That looks like the champagne breakfast SeaLord!

Indeed. I think it was the one when we never got airborne. Everyone was cold because we did not have the correct clothes.

  • We had the correct clothes, puffers, warm hats and gloves.

  • Great! We are so excited! We are packing and think we should be ok but we won’t know what we don’t have until we need it! Thank you for the input!
