we are going on this tour in Sept. 2024.

  1. arriving a day early into Porto, what would you suggest that is not on the tour to see?

  2. what did you do on the free day in Marbella Spain?

  • Porto - We enjoyed wandering through the Ribeira district which is along the waterfront. Weave in and out of the side streets and enjoy the colorful facades of the buildings. If not included, take the gondola ride for stunning views.

Marbella - The hotel is very nice and there are several outdoor eating venues. In 2015, all Tauck guests on our small group tour were given rooms with views of the Mediterranean. Take a swim in the Sea or the pool. We also enjoyed walking into the small, quaint old town area. We very much appreciated that free day!

This was our favorite land tour. Enjoy! If by chance you are fortunate to have Patricia H. as your tour director, you are in for a very special treat. Regardless, I think you will have a wonderful time.

  • We wandered around the neighborhood near the hotel in Porto on arrival day, then walked to the Ribeira neighborhood the day of the welcome dinner. The walk back is all uphill, but we took the funicular. It doesn’t get you all the way back, but it helps.

There is a wide wooden seafront promenade in Marbella. We took the opportunity to sleep in, had a leisurely breakfast, then walked the promenade to the Old Town that kfn mentioned for a bit of shopping and lunch. We enjoyed the hotel outdoors in the afternoon. There is a catamaran you can take from the pier near the Old Town to a really, really high end area. Some in our group did that and enjoyed it. The day is a required rest day for the bus driver and we were grateful for the rest also.

  • I forgot to mention that Portugal leads the world in the manufacturing of cork products. Even if you have no intention of purchasing anything, you might enjoy browsing the amazing array of cork products at Cultura Portuguesa in Porto. You will find many places selling cork items in Coimbra (different Tauck tour) and around the tourist spots by the water in Lisbon that might be fine for inexpensive gifts and souvenirs, but for the best quality and variety visit the aforementioned shop in Porto. As the old adage infers, "you get what you pay for."
