Be aware of cool summer temperatures in Kenya & Tanzania

We just returned from the Gorilla Safari: Kenya, Tanzania & Rwanda. Our tour director had warned us in advance to bring extra layers of warm clothing for our safari tour that began July 9 and ended July 24. It was surprisingly cool while we were in Kenya and Tanzania. Daytime temperatures were in the low 70's, with morning temperatures going as low as 50 degrees. All the locals were wearing jackets. It gets really cool in the early morning as you go out for your game drive with the top up on the Land Cruiser. I packed shorts and short sleeve shirts, and never wore them. I didn't expect the weather would be that cool for countries on or near the Equator.

  • See my reply on your other post. These are normal temperatures for there. Tauck gives you temperatures to expect when they describe the tour. I recommend long pants and long shirts to protect you from the intense sun because you are at the equator so the sun bears directly down on you. Also, it helps to have the long clothing so you don’t have to use too much deet.

  • Yes, Tauck gives you temperatures to expect. I read all that. But people still have the expectation that, if you are on or near the equator in Africa, it is going to be hot. We took a load of Deet wipes and sprayed our clothes, but did not have any significant issues with bugs. Didn't use any of the deet wipes. My intent was simply to remind people to anticipate some cool conditions and take enough extra layers of warm clothing.

They shouldn't have any such expectation! The areas in Kenya and Tanzania where Tauck travels are at nearly a mile in elevation where the air is thinner, there is a lot of radiant cooling, and so it cools easily over night into the mornings. Just the same way, people shouldn't assume it doesn't get cool in the high desert air in many places around the world!

  • Alan S. Well said.

  • You got it right Alan, when I went it was chilly the day that we went to the Equator point.
