or for a full day, take the Midlothian bus to Craigmillar Castle (Mary Queen of Scots tie-in, challenge stop on Amazing Race a few years ago) in a nature park across from the Royal Infirmary, (access to the ramparts) then continue on the bus to Rosslyn Chapel (Dan Brown's Davinci Code tie-in). Bus was inexpensive and easy peasy way to travel.

I second the Royal Yacht. Easy to get to on the tram. Also the National Museum of Scotland.
