Weather in August

Wondering from past travelers, how is the weather in Scotland in August? Thank you

  • Trying to predict the weather these days is a risky endeavor. You can find websites with averages and travelers who experienced various conditions and none of that will really tell you want you will encounter. We did the England, Scotland Wales tour several years ago in early July where it was cool, windy and wet from Edinburgh down thru Wales. I had to buy a fleece pullover. By the time we got to London it was sunny and hot. Went back to Scotland two years ago in June and saw one brief day of rain and the rest was a heat wave. Ended up having to buy another short sleeve shirt. Even checking the 10 day forecasts the day before departure didn't help. Assume you may encounter anything from a heat wave to cold/wet/windy and pack accordingly. Be able to layer as needed.

  • Agree that the temperature is variable. We went in 2019 and attended the Tattoo in August. It was cold. The TD bought each of us a scarf which was greatly appreciated. Be sure to wear appropriate clothing and have sweaters, gloves and a hat available throughout your trip. I agree with Claudia regarding the variability, by the time we got to London it was hot and we needed shorts.

As the hotel staff said in Comwy (Wales), it's never bad weather just inappropriate clothing!

I'd also suggest that you check your weather app just before you leave home. While not perfect, it will give you a better idea about what to expect.

  • The British talk about the weather constantly, it is unpredictable and more extreme now with global warming.
In addition, August is very busy, the children are off school and vacationing and the last Monday of August is Bank holiday and everywhere is extra busy that long weekend.
