Meeting point in florence?
Hello! My husband and I are working on arrangements to get to Florence on time for a Tauck pickup and transfer to hotel. However, as there are no direct flights to Florence, we are flying into Rome and then will either take the high speed train to Florence, or take a connecting flight to Florence. The train(s) are a bit of a hassle, but economical. Just wondering what other folks are doing?

Most people like to fly in a day early. If you do arrive by train, let Tauck know at least 3 weeks before and they will arrange transportation to the hotel from the station.
Tauck will arrange for your pick up no matter the arrival time. You just need to let them know. I have always found European train travel to be efficient, clean and timely.
I would take a connecting flight. Rome's airport is some ways out of the city. To take a train, you would have to get a bus or a local train to one of Rome's train stations and transfer to the high-speed train to Florence. Since you'd have to handle your luggage, this would be a major hassle.
If you want to get an idea of what would be required to take the train, go to Google Maps and ask for directions from Leonardo Da Vinci Intl Airport to Firenze Santa Maria Novella, Piazza della Stazione. Click on the public transit icon (looks like a train). Below that change "Leave now" to the time and date you think you'd leave the airport. It will show you the options. I think you'll decide to fly.
Happy Travels!
By the way, if you haven't booked your Rome flight already, there are other options to connect to Florence. Last time we were there we flew through Zurich, which is a short hop from Florence.
Florence's airport is very small. Most or all of the flights are regional.
Thanks, Ken. We looked at both options. We were a little concerned about the connecting flights (having enough time to make them, and our bags making it, too) so we opted for the direct to Rome. The bullet trains from Termini run every 30 mins. And yeah, it is bit of a hassle to take the train from airport to Termini, but at least I'll have my luggage with me.
BTW, for anyone else in the same boat, there is a train to Florence train station that leaves right from Rome airport! But there's only one at 11:00 am and it takes 2 1/2 hours. Since our flight gets in super early, we didn't want to wait around 4 hours to make that train.
