Binoculars

Any recommendations for good or at least decent lightweight binoculars under $100?

  • Under a 100 is tough. Look at Nikon or opticron. I use Nikon monarchs for other things. Either 8 x 32 or 8 x 42

  • Suitable brands can be found at around $100. We bought a couple of pairs for our grandkids for Africa last year at that price from REI but I can’t remember the brand. We got the ones I think that were 8x 32 as it was explained that the higher number ones were more prone to shaking when viewing. They worked well and were sufficient for animals that were far away. Having said that, most were right by the vehicle

Try before you buy! Get what works for you. Everyone has different visual acuity and other visual conditions- despite the same power, what works for one person may not be ideal for another. My wife wears glasses and finds it almost impossible to use binoculars at all.

  • A monocular works much better for me. I discovered this after my return from Botswana. I’m an anomaly, my eyes can’t focus with binoculars. I know it doesn’t make any sense, and I’ve tried my best with binoculars.

  • Thank you all so much. Grateful to benefit from y’all’s experience.
