I did this trip a few years ago. For me, there was no need for local currency. They accepted CCs or USDs everywhere I went, which included some local markets.
Thailand does not accept anything but their own currency. We always get a bit of local money for tips. I don't want the bartender etc. to have to go to the bank to convert.
For our November trip, we did use some local currency for Vietnam and Thailand, mostly for tips. In Vietnam we did a couple of independent tours, and preferred tipping in local currency.

No need for local money
They were very happy to take USD as tips.

I’m sure bartenders get lots of dollars and happy to go to the bank.
