Alternative to Normandy Beach

I'm not interested in seeing the beaches of Normandy. Has anyone done anything else during this stop? Explored on their own? if so, what did you do and how did you do it (ex: private tour, taxi to town, bike ride to town, etc.). I'll be there in April. On a river cruise, so there will be no hotel switching for us. I've also read that the bus ride to the beaches is 2 hours or so, so that should be plenty of time to explore a local town and be back on the ship in time. Thanks in advance.

PS: Everyone has different interests, and what floats one person's boat doesn't float another's. No need to judge.
