May and June. The local children are still in school, though there are two holidays in May, so it’s busy from Saturday until Monday evening. Gardens are lovely and the evenings stay light much later than in the US, up to10 pm in England and 11pm In Scotland.
Unless you want to see some special event like the Military Tattoo in Edinburgh, then August is your time.
August in Scotland is definitely not the time to go, I’ve lived there!
Was just in Scotland in July and the weather was pretty awful. Our TD (who lives in Scotland) said May was the best month there for weather.
I was there in August several years ago and in Edenborough and went to the Tattoo and the Fringe was also going on. Perfect timing for that. Weather wasn't bad the entire trip. A little rain here and there, but it's the UK, so that's expected.
Funny thing about weather. I was there last August specifically for the Military Tattoo and the weather was great! It wasn’t cold at all for the Tattoo and we had sunny skies most of the trip. In fact it was hot in Wales, which was tough as the hotel had no air conditioning. Didn’t ruin anyone’s good time. It’s a great trip, with lots of surprises!
Trying to predict tour weather these days is pretty hit or miss. That's why I've longed stopped worrying about having lots of dressy clothes and more focused on being able to adjust to conditions on the ground. I've had only one tour day where I wasn't dressed up enough but several where the weather made things miserable. Live and learn.
I still disagree about August being best.
British - Best is in the eye of the beholder and based on what you want to see.
If you want to see flowers in bloom, have kids be in school, or have statistically the least rain, then May is the time.
If you want to see the Military Tattoo or have statistically the warmest weather, then obviously August is the time.
