Cash for tipping the Tour Director

I understand that the Tour Director's tip is not covered by Tauck. That's fine.
What have other travelers done about carrying their DT tip money along the 13-day tour? At a Tauck's suggested $15 per day per traveler, that's a pretty hefty wad of cash to carry around for two weeks. Any strategies?

  • I give what I have left over in foreign currency and get money from an ATM as the tour winds down and put in in an envelope with a thank you note, given to the TD at the farewill dinner.

  • There are no ATMs on the K&T The people are very honest. My wife sent her clothes to the laundry and accidentally left a substantial amount of money in her pocket. The money came back. You can also have your valuables kept in the hotel safe. The local currency in Kenya and Tanzania is worthless anywhere else.

  • Carrying large amounts of cash for tips is frequently discussed on the forum. SeaLord is correct about no ATM’s. Most people do carry cash in an envelopefrom home ready to give the TD at the farewell dinner.

  • Is any type of currency ok? US/Euro's, etc...

  • We bring US currency.

  • Tauck suggest US$ or local equivalent in their documents.

  • Local currency is useless in K&T. Use dollars or euros. We found it impossible to even exchange Tanzania currency in Kneya. They woould not accept it in any way shape or form.

  • Kenya and Tanzania happily accept dollars. They must be clean and not old or it can be difficult to exchange them at the local banks
