Eastbound or Westbound - does it matter?

Trying to decide when to do the The Blue Danube river cruise in 2027 and wondering if it matters whether we go eastbound or westbound? Or should we just pick out date and not worry about it? Does ship matter? Would love recommendations on cabin and deck too.

  • I have not taken this specific cruise but we always travel in either spring or fall to avoid the heat and crowds of summer.

Which direction to travel might depend on where you wish to have your Gift of Time (if applicable) hotel stay, pre and post tour days and availability of the most direct flights from your home state.

Cabin selection is very much a personal choice. We have always enjoyed the category seven (7) cabins on the older ships and the category five (5) on the newer ships—both being 300 sq. ft. You can view the cabin types and amenities by going to Tauck’s website, find your cruise and view the cabins.

All of Tauck’s ships have virtually the same configuration. The newer ones for the Douro, Seine and Rhône Rivers have the more casual eatery on the same level as the lounge.

  • Depends if you want to arrive early or stay later and what city you wish do to that. I suggest spending an extra two days in Prague. Rooms is your choice. We usually chose the Ruby Deck. I don’t need the extra space on the diamond deck but more than the emerald deck. We usually choose cat 5. Some people really like the cat 3s. The ships are well maintained so it doesn’t matter if it is the Joy or Savor

  • Hi Karen, I really like the layout of the Cat 3 cabins. We were on a Rhine River cruise last summer and will be on a Blue Danube river cruise this July. We booked cabin 110 again for this year's trip plus another Cat 3 for our son and his wife. In addition to the nice layout, there was plenty of storage space and they are quiet. You are on the same level with the solo cabins and the gym and I never saw anyone use the gym. I also never heard any engine noise. We are arriving a few days early in Prague. There were more sites of interest in Prague and everyone likes the Fairmont hotels, which is the start of the Prague trip.

  • For 2027 the ship choices you'll have are the Joy, Savor, and Espirit though it looks like the Espirit sailings are mostly already sold out. The Joy and Savor are virtually identical. The two longer ships have 2 cabins not available on the Espirit. The Cat 3 Loft cabins which are 225 sqft on the lowest deck but they have huge windows and a nice seating area - probably the best bang for your dollar available. There is also a Category 5 on the Ruby deck (middle) which are the same size but the cabin is all on one level. All three ships have a Cat 6 which is also 225 sqft. All three cabin types are plenty large for two people, plenty of storage and the bathrooms are basically the same as the Cat 7 suites. Our personal favorite is the Cat 6.
