Early arrivals activities in Munich

We arrive a day early in Munich at 7:10 am on Sept 2. Looking for great ideas to do the arrival day and the next day. Sept.3rd looks to be a good day for food and beer tour. What has been a good one for you? Anyone else booked on this trip?

    I did a half day bike tour in Munich last year. It was very good. Ride was flat and slow paced.

    Depending on your interests, there are a number of tours provided by a company called Viator - things like day trips to Neuschwanstein Castle or Dachau (sobering but something I feel like everyone should see at least once) - and a number of local Munich tours.

    There are six major breweries in Munich. All of them have brewery-owned beer halls. Avoid the Hof Brau Haus, It's a tourist trap and you'll probably visit on your Tauck tour (we did). Spaten has a beer hall close to your hotel, but I'd go a bit further to the Augustiner-Keller. Augustiner beer is the local favorite, and they have a large beer hall and adjacent beer garden. Also, be sure to visit Dallmayr, a gourmet food store with a long history near the Marien Platz. There is also outdoor food market (Viktualienmarkt) nearby. You'll probably visit it on your Tauck tour, but it's worth a little more time. It has a beer garden, too. Lots to see and do within walking distance of your hotel. No need for a guide.

    I suppose everyone who goes to Munich eventually goes to the Hofbrauhaus. And perhaps everyone should go there once just to see the place.

    But it's a tourist place. There are a number of real beer gardens where the locals go that you may find more interesting. Augustiner-Keller is a decent place.

    Just a clarification of JaneP's comment about Viator. They are not a tour company; they are a booking company. All tours are provided by third parties. While I use them frequently and have never had a problem, be sure to read the reviews before booking.

    We too have used Viator successfully. Agree with Ken about reading the reviews. Also the cancelation policy and meeting locations. They can be different.

    Viator and Trip Advisor have been good to us over the years. We've never encountered an issue in past bookings with city and foodie tours. Hope this helps!

    Just like Ken said, Dallmayr is a great spot to pop into. Their fresh chocolate bark is quite good! No need for a guide :)

    Just one more comment about beer halls. I found the beer to be very low in alcohol content. You can drink a liter of beer and not be drunk. Of course, if you drink a liter you'l need to know where the restroom is.

    I am not into cars but it was great fun when my husband and I went to the BMW museum in Munich. We spent several hours there - interesting architecture - and had a nice lunch in their dining room.
