Biking Excursion

For those who've done the Blue Danube river cruise - there's  an optional bicycle excursion along the Danube described as "a fairly rigorous bike ride, for experienced cyclists only". Two questions - are there e-bikes to ride and what about the excursion makes it for experienced riders only?

I assume you are referring to the ride either on Day 4 heading east or Day 9 heading west. They did not have e bikes 3 years ago. The ride takes 2.5 hours and is mostly flat and you will cross the river on a small boat half way through. The bike ride in Durnstien is not worth it so take the other excursion. The climb up to the ruins is a little difficult with some uneven steps and dirt path on the front side and a steep grade on the back side, but the views are great. The one in Bratislava people found interesting. If you have free time in Bratislava take some time to go up to the fortress overlooking the river.

I did the long ride several years ago. I don't bike regularly so trained for a two months before which helped. The ride then was 43km/26mi. There were 3 groups- young jackrabbits who zoomed out ahead, turtles at the tail end, and me, by myself, in the middle. Frankly, the views along this stretch of the Danube were not all that interesting. My wife did the ride in Durnstein which was much shorter, but had same groups. The most interesting parts were the short stop they made at a vineyard (w/local narrator) and visit/short walk around Weisenkirken with one of the TDs. I and three others plus a TD climbed to the ruin above Durnstein- interesting and great views.
