Attire and excursion recommendations
I will be on a Blue Danube River cruise with Tauck at the end of October. What is the attire for men and women for dinner on the boat and at the palaces? Can you be specific about how dressy each is?
Also, are there any excursions you enjoyed more than others? I’m not able to do the very active ones like cycling.

I haven’t taken this cruise but several others. “Dressy” can mean different things based on the individual. I can only tell you what my preferences are.
For touring, a versatile mix and match wardrobe works best for us. We freshen up before dinner. Tauck requests that you refrain from wearing shorts, jeans, sneakers and flip flops in the main dining room.
There is usually a “chef’s signature dinner” at least once and a gala evening out at a château or equivalent on each cruise. For those I usually wear a dress or dress slacks with a nice top or jacket. My husband always wears a suit jacket with or without a tie. These are our preferences, not a requirement.
This is the usual river cruise recommendation from Tauck: During evenings aboard the riverboat, dress is resort casual. Items such as slacks and collared shirts are appropriate for men. For women, slacks, a dress or a skirt and blouse are suitable. For dinner and throughout the evening, guests should refrain from wearing shorts, t-shirts, flip-flops or sneakers. Your journey also includes one or two special occasion dinners, where a sport coat and tie for gentlemen and a dress/pantsuit for ladies are suggested. (Your Tauck Director will advise you prior to those evenings.)
ship dinners: nice attire at least dress pants and button down with/without a sweater for men. No shorts, no denim, no t-shirts, no flip flops. there are two ship dinners which are slightly more dressy the Chef signature dinner and the Captain's dinner. In Prague, at the palace dinner nice attire similar to the ship dinners. I personally wore a blazer but no tie. You will be walking from the bus to the palace over uneven cobbles. This cannot be done in heels without peril. Either flats or switch over when you get inside. You will have time to see the art in the palace. The Vienna dinner is probably the most dressy of any Tauck special events. For men, I would consider it tie optional, but a coat is needed.
There is no captain’s dinner on river cruises, only chef’s signature dinner. At least that is what I have experienced.
The captain’s welcome reception in the lounge on the first evening is when the crew is introduced to the guests.
I think I am confusing it with the farewell reception. For your excursion do not miss the Strahow Monastery. Unlike most tours, you actually will go inside the rooms rather than peering in from the door.
