The GEM opening

  • This event has been tracked on the Forum for years. I thought I'd post the latest (Estimated opening late-2023). How many times have we seen something like this? :D

  • The GEM is already open (sort of - very limited access). They are currently having a "soft" opening with limited tours of the building, although none of the galleries are included. The stated purpose is to "test site readiness and the visitor experience." I'm guessing that means that the gift shop will be open to take your money. :)

    Tickets may be bought here:

Personally, I'm not booking a trip to Egypt until I've seen that all of the museum has opened.

  • Ken - Personally, I'm not booking a trip to Egypt until I've seen that all of the museum has opened.

Good plan. I hope you're still alive when that happens. :D

  • We are going on October 29 this year and will keep our fingers crossed that it will be opened.

  • Smiling Sam
    July 2021

GEM opening scheduled for one week after AlanS's tour concludes, whenever that is! :D

    Obviously, just kidding.

We've been back for a year now. You were off by just a smidge! :D:D:D

As I said in a post back then, regardless of its appearance, the website Sam is referencing is not the official GEM website

  • Calling it the GEM was a fitting name, considering how long it takes for gems to form...

  • According to website,
    Grand Egyptian Museum
    Estimated opening: Late-2023

  • Our trip begins November 19, 2023 so still hoping it will be open then but the way they keep postponing the opening we’re not getting our hopes up.

  • The Gem has had a ‘soft’ opening, you can only go into the courtyard at present

  • Just saw that the GEM Grand Opening delayed again to the 4th quarter of 2025.

It has 'soft' opened where most of the exhibits are visitable.

  • Shocking, not! :)

  • Amazing, just amazing! This gives a whole new meaning to Inshallah!!

  • There goes the Professor again, using those big words. I had to look up Inshallah. 😃

Inshallah - an Arabic phrase meaning “if God wills” or “God willing”.

Inshallah is a lot like the Spanish mañana, but with a LOT LESS urgency. :D

  • My husband spent 3 yrs with CENTCOM and made trips over in the region. He always talked about the drivers and their "Inshallah" attitude to driving safety.

  • I was there in February and everything was open except the King Tut exhibit.

  • My understanding is that all the Tut artifacts, except the golden mask, have been moved to the GEM. Not clear whether all those galleries are open yet. The mask is still in the old museum but is expected to be moved before the Grand Opening. Tut's remains are in Luxor and will remain there.

The reason given for the latest delay is the turmoil in the region (they didn't want to celebrate when missiles were flying, and airspaces had been closed). The current date is now late 2025. However, the GEM has been on the "next November" schedule for years.

  • F you are in England and can get to visit Highclere….the mansion used for Downton Abbey in the Cotswolds. It is owned by Lord Carnarvon whose ancestor discovered Tutankhamen’s tomb. In his basement are many Egyptian artifacts, plus, if you can’t make it to Egypt, has a replica of the mask.

  • Ken from Vegas
    Tut's remains are in Luxor

    So near you in Vegas?

They announced today that the grand opening will be on November 1. Not sure when the King Tut mask will be moved from the old museum.

  • What year? :D:D

    1. Al-Sisi has spoken. So let it be written, so let it be done. (Inshallah!) :D
