Danube Kingdoms: Bavaria, Austria & Hungary

We are doing this river cruise in October, 2025. We are thinking of going to Munich a couple-few days early. Any suggestions for things to see and do in/around the Munich area (that aren't on the Tauck itinerary)? We can even rent a car and do some day trips. Thank you.

  • I am not familiar with this itinerary but if you enjoy food markets, Munich’s Viktualienmarkt is a great place to wander through and sample regional specialties.

Driving or taking the train to Nürnberg (Nuremberg) makes for an easy day trip or two-day stay because of its historical significance. The Documentation Center Museum focuses on Hitler’s Nazi Party and offers a very poignant, but sobering, experience. There are also several other museums that might be of interest.

    Enjoy your tour.

  • Nina Loo, We did this tour in October, 2024 and enjoyed it very much. I loved Munich! We arrived a couple days ahead and using Rick Steves to plan our time did 2 walking tours of the city using Radius Tours (Third Reich Tour and Discover Munich) and spent time at the the Documentation Center that kfnknfzk mentioned. Rick Steves has a walking tour of the city that was very helpful as well.

  • kfnknfzk, when you did the Nuremberg day in Germany did you hire a guide there? And if not, how is it getting around the city from the train? Uber? Taxi? Thank you!

    Hi, mazalea.

My time in Nürnberg was very brief. I took a taxi upon arrival at the train station and either walked or took a taxi after that. I was my own guide.

If you go, I highly recommend the Documentation Museum. I wish I had more time to see more of the city.
