Valparaiso and Vina del Mar
Having recently returned from the Essence of South America trip, I am recommending guides. We flew to Santiago a few days early. Vivian Prouteau (www.abctour.org) (vivian@abctour.org) picked us up at the Santiago airport and drove us to Valparaiso where we stayed at the Zero Hotel, a lovely boutique hotel with a great location and view of the Pacific. It is in a good location with lots of restaurants within easy walking distance.
Vivian is very familiar with the area and gave us a good introduction to Chile, Valparaiso, and Santiago. He is reliable and reasonable and picked us up at the Zero to take us back to Santiago where we spent a day and a half on our own before the Tauck tour began. He also offers guided tours of Valparaiso, Vina del Mar and Santiago, but was booked during our stay.
