How cold are Category 1 cabins on Christmas Market River boat cruises?

Hi All. I am planning on taking the family on a Christmas Market river cruise. I am feeling guilty about putting my single son in a Category 1 cabin while the rest of us have ceiling to floor windows, but the price differential is $2000+ for 7 nights. It just seems like a lot..... I was wondering if anyone can relay their experience in terms of was the room warm enough in the winter? It looks to me like part of the cabin is below sea level and I was thinking it might be really cold. Any experiences would be much appreciated.

  • I have not stayed in that category, but the ship is well insulated and you can control the room temperature. You can also ask for more blankets.

You are more likely to feel a chill when sitting in the public spaces if near an opening to the outside.

    Enjoy your trip.

  • I've taken 2 Christmas Markets River cruises - Danube 2023 and Rhine 2024 and have stayed in category 1 cabins as a solo traveler. I will say that I was very cold on the Danube boat - the Joy, cabin 106, but not so bad on the Rhine - the Inspire, cabin 106. On both ships, though, the bathrooms were cold - floor and seat, but I would leave the door open during the night w/my boot to help and would wear the slippers they provide in the rooms. You do have control on the temperature, like kfnknfzk said, but for some reason on the Joy mine would change and the air conditioner would kick in and was blowing right on me. I did have engineering in, but they just kept explaining to me how the room was regulated which I understand, but it should not have been blasting very cold air on me like it was. It was probably just my room as there were 4 other ladies I was traveling with, all in category 1 cabins, who did not seem to have the same complaint that I did.

  • I also was in. Cat 1 on the Danube in 2024. My room was warm enough but the bathroom was very chilly. You have to run the shower to heat the floor before stepping in otherwise it felt like a block of ice. The seat was also very cool. It wakes you up. But, I would do it again because it’s all part of traveling. A great cruise and great fellowship

  • We've traveled in Cat 1 a few times in Dec for the Market Cruises and had no temperature issues.

  • Thank you all for your guidance. It looks like the ship is the Joy for the cruise we want. I will definitely NOT book cabin 106 for my solo son. :) He keeps his house at 68 ( OMG) , so he likes it cold, however , there is cold and then there is winter in central Europe cold.... Thanks again.

  • I hope they fixed the issue by the time of your trip, but probably still smart to pick a different cabin!

    Enjoy…it’s a great river cruise!

  • I didn't have an issue with the cat 1 cabin but I tend to prefer cool to warm temps. Oddly on our Danube cruise the suites had an issue one morning the day after a big snow storm followed by a freeze. Heat units froze up and the crew was banging around on the sun deck trying to get them fixed so those in the suites got woken up to that fun and the ship, especially the lounge, was cold. But that was likely a freak occurrence.

  • Got him room 111. If it is cold he can sleep on one of the sofa beds in our rooms upstairs. B)
