See Round #20 for info about and rules for the contest.
Round #76 won by SueMS
Submitted by Sealord. It is one of two 3500 years old Egyptian Sphinxes portraying Amenhotep III wearing the dual crown of Upper and Lower Egypt. They were originally from a temple in Thebes but are now located in Saint Petersburg, Russia. They arrived in 1830. By the time the initial purchase proposal made it from the Embassy in Cairo to Nicholas I of Russia and then to the Russian Academy of Arts, both had been sold to a French buyer. As a result of the French Revolution, Saint Petersburg got the sphinxes after all. They can be seen today on the waterfront in front of the Imperial Academy of Arts.

Where is it? What is the structure?
Boldt Castle. Thousand Island Canada
Boldt Castle is in NY
I was there as a kid and thought it was very interesting then and still an interesting story . As shown it has one of the most fanciful looking power plants anywhere!!
OK its in the USA by a mile, but I had to go look at the border location just to be sure. But its still Boldt castle and the yacht house if you want to be exact.
Nope, not the yacht house. Believe it or not it is the power plant. Below is the yacht house, which is actually across the water on Wellesly Island not Heart Island where the castle is located. One of the tour page photos shows the locations of both:
We have a daughter that lives up there in the “North Country”. We stay in Alexandria Bay a few times a year. Right on the St Lawrence River within view of the Castle Beautiful area in a honky tonk sort of way. Used to get a lot of Canadians when their currency was close to par with ours. Gets a lot of friendly type bikers as well.
I can't believe all the restoration work the Thousand Islands Bridge Authority (the owner) has had done to the place! When I was there about 50 some years ago (yikes!) everything was pretty much like it was when Boldt stopped work in 1904 when his wife died, only more deteriorated. One image still sticks in my mind- a grand staircase stair tread plank sticking out into the main room that had only partially been cut through and never trimmed to length.
Speaking of power and power plants- what was unique about Boldt's Power house? What is interesting about its clock tower?
I believe we'll award this round to rwilso15, BKMD, and AlanS. I assume photo was taken during the "cruise along the St. Lawrence River through the scenic Thousand Islands." on Day 3 of Canada's Capital Cities plus Niagara Falls tour.
Feel free to continue to discuss as I launch the next round.
Alan, yes, it was taken during the Canada's Capital Cities plus NIagara Falls tour.
