Headlamps

Do we need headlamps for this safari trip

Comments

  • Having a small flashlight is recommended, but I don’t recall seeing anyone with a headlamp. I can think of a couple places where a headlamp could be useful, but I would not call it ‘necessary’.

  • If you go with a flashlight, I found this Duracell 250 lumen flashlight to be adequate. 250 lumens may not seem like much but when it's really dark, this is very adequate. It's also small so it doesn't take a lot of room in your suitcase.

I also have these 550 lumen flashlights which are brighter and a bit larger. The link is to a pack of three, which makes them cheaper (per each) than the 250 lumen light.

No, but small flashlight is recommended. They give you a big flashlight to use if you spend the night sleeping under the stars on the pan and need to venture to the potty tent. There is electric lighting in all tents and along walkways in all camps. They don't want you wandering out and about at night without an escort anyway, and he will have a flashlight.

The only time I've ever used a headlamp on any Tauck tour was during a private excursion during the Jordan & Egypt tour. All tombs in the Valley of Kings are lighted as are the passageways and burial chambers in the Giza pyramids. Even the off-the-beaten-path pyramid (Meidom) I entered had lighting, though not as good. It was still helpful to have my own headlamp in those two so I had both hands free to grab handrails, climb ladders to the burial chambers, illuminate darker areas, and take photos.

  • Headlamps are advantageous if you need to keep your hands free, but I never use one. I find my iPhone flashlight adequate but also pack a small lightweight flashlight as Mike described.

  • I think they are mentioned because if electricity goes out, they could really help and it does happen.
We have headlamps and small flashlights but don’t always take them
