Hi,any thoughts on the Christmas cruise on the Danube from Vienna to Nuremberg VS THE Rhine cruise formr Basel to Disseldorf? Thanks.

I've sailed the Rhine and the Danube on non-Christmas cruises. When I went to chose a Christmas cruise I opted for the Danube because more of the stops are close enough to walk to/from the markets or are fairly short coach rides. I don't regret the choice and thoroughly enjoyed it. Basically a week long Christmas party.

We've done them both a few times. While the Rhine is stunning - the Danube is better and the markets are more authentic. The Xmas Markets originated in Germany and are still best there compared to the ones on the Rhine which are mostly Switzerland and France w/more Chinese imported items (compared to the wood and pewter items you will see in Germany). You really can't beat Vienna, Salzburg, Passau, Regensburg, & Nuremberg for the Xmas Markets.

The Rhine towns are stunning. But if the Markets are a one & done trip for you - def do the Danube. Book early and extend on each end.

I agree w/both Claudia and Terri....I did the Christmas on the Danube in Dec 2023, then the Rhine in Dec 2024. I thought the markets were much better on the Danube but enjoyed the guided tours better on the Rhine. I'd say do one, then the other. :-) I'm doing the Yuletide cruise this year, then the Holiday on the Seine next year. I love a holiday theme!
