On-trip airline luggage restrictions?

Hi all, we're doing the Elegant Adventure tour in September. Does anyone have information about luggage restrictions for the smaller flights on the tour? I've been told there can be strict limits (i.e. carry-on only) for flights in Africa but am not sure this applies to the flights for this tour. Any input is most appreciated!

  • Since we took the tour about 2009, I think luggage stuff has changed. People here don’t seem to care about the restrictions but I would say, take too big a bag at your own risk because there could be consequences. The planes are small, no room for big bags and fuel measurements are based on what should be the weight of each person’s luggage,
This Africa tour does not require lots of fancy clothing, especially on the safari portion. Even in Cape Town it’s casual Even the lovey Cape Grace hotel, an all time favorite for us for service, will treat everyone the same, however you are dressed. The key thing is you are going in winter so it can be really cold in the early mornings on safari, so bring layers, some may even need gloves. The vehicles generally provide blankets. Cape Town weather is very changeable, you can encounter wind rain or fog as well as sunshine, so again be prepared. Cape Town is one of my favorite destinations.

  • Luggage restrictions are stated on Tauck's website page for your tour under the section titled "Air Information and Luggage Restrictions". Should also be in your final documents and your Tauck account page.

  • I did look Claudia but it’s virtually a generic description of most journeys. I assume it will be on final documents that when discussed here recently people seem to want to disregard what is asked of them which in my mind is unfair to everyone else, possibly dangerous and crazy.

  • This is what I read which gives weight limits but not dimensions:

Special Luggage Restrictions for this Tour:

Checked luggage aboard the on-tour flights to and from Johannesburg and Victoria Falls may not exceed 44 lb (20 kg).

In addition, guests are limited to one soft-sided, carry-on bag per person not to exceed 15 lbs (6.8 kg), and no larger than an average knapsack.

  • Thanks for your comments. I found the same generic information as posted above. I believe more detailed info will be sent in the pre-trip docs about 60 days before the trip, but I'd like to know sooner than later!

  • So justification to call Tauck and ask

  • We just got home. The on tour flights call for 44 lb. Max, but they were not as strict as I was afraid they’d be. I know that by the end of the trip my bag had to be over that and I started at 43 pounds. According to our tour director, they can let it go, but you should never assume they will. Pack lighter than you think you should. You can do laundry for a reasonable price at the Safari lodges.
