Visas system delayed
This is from the CIBT website
The European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) is an electronic pre-screening tool for entry into the 27 countries in the Schengen zone from the 60+ countries that currently enjoy visa-free travel into the zone (Schengen covers much of the European Union). But since its announcement in 2018, ETIAS has been plagued by delays. While ETIAS was supposed to go into effect in November 2023, its formal roll-out has been pushed back again to an unspecified date in 2024

That is actually good news if you are traveling to Europe this year!
Oooh, oooh, maybe the opening of the GEM will indeed happen first. I hear it is imminent!
Do ETIAS and the GEM have the same managers?
The EES electronic entry and exit system which is a prerequisite for ETIAS was supposed to roll out in May 2023. It's now delayed to November 2023. This probably caused or contributed to the delay in ETIAS. EES replaces the old rubber stamp entry and exit system with an electronic version including biometric identification.
