Is local currency needed on the Essential South America tour?
No!! I never needed local currency. Used credit cards for cabs, meals and purchases. I did bring US currency and used that too.
A note on using US currency. Some places are very particular and require that the US bills be brand new (no wrinkles).

some kids like foreign currency....get a little a 1000 peso note is worth about 70c US, a nice souvenier
