(Time for something on the light side!) My first international trip was to Canada, but my first trip abroad was a summer study tour to the USSR in 1969. We began our trip in London and took a Soviet ship, the TS Estonia, to Leningrad, stopping in Copenhagen and Helsinki along the way. Many of our group has stayed in touch over the years. One of my fellow travelers just posted a link to a video about the development of the Soviet tourist industry that included clips of the Estonia. The video panned a page of ads for tourism in the New York Times in the 1930s, and I paused it when I saw the attached ad:

    Love the history in that newspaper!. My first international trip was to Italy with my art history prof and a group of fellow students. I had worked all summer as a waitress to pay the freight for a month away which included round trip air and all room and board. My hand was shaking when I wrote the check because I had never written a check that large. The year was 1970. The check was for $650.00.
