Tauck does not care about reviews. Once you pay, they do not care about customers. If you do take a tour with them and have any issues on the tour itself, they will not help, just as an FYI. I don't think this is only a Tauck issue. There were a few people on our tour who asked Tauck for help; they replied, "Ask your tour director." That does not work when the tour director is the problem. We recently completed Tauck's A Week in Switzerland. We are seasoned travelers and have taken numerous guided tours, so we understand that travel does not always go according to plan. Delays, unexpected changes, and logistical challenges are part of traveling. What we do expect, however, is a tour director who is professional, organized, respectful, and capable of handling challenges with composure.
Unfortunately, our experience with our tour director fell far below those expectations.
From day one, it was apparent that our guide did not want to be on this tour. Her attitude and behavior set a negative tone that continued throughout the trip. She was disorganized, frequently blamed local guides for her own mistakes, and demonstrated a troubling lack of professionalism in her interactions with both guests and local staff.
When we encountered a train issue caused by mechanical problems, I want to be clear that the mechanical failure was not her fault. However, the situation revealed her inability to manage an unexpected disruption, communicate a clear plan, or reassure the group. Problems happen when traveling; how a tour director responds to them is what matters.
Her treatment of guests was particularly disappointing. Members of our group were consistently polite and kind, yet she was rude to guests, sometimes in front of the entire group. Her interactions with other guides were equally concerning. She yelled at them, creating an uncomfortable atmosphere for everyone present. She also made numerous inappropriate comments about other cultures, which was both unprofessional and inconsistent with the cultural sensitivity one should expect from someone representing an international travel company.
The welcome dinner on the first evening was another example of the lack of preparation. She distributed sheets of paper asking guests to verify their return flight information. When guests pointed out that the information was incorrect, she became angry with them. These were the very people she had asked to review the information. Guests should never be made to feel at fault for identifying errors they were specifically asked to flag. In an age when travel information can be managed and verified digitally, this process also seemed unnecessarily cumbersome.
We also heard concerns from hotel staff about receiving information late or not receiving it in time to properly prepare for arrangements. More troubling still was the way our guide spoke to hotel employees. We could hear her chastising staff, and her behavior toward the people working hard behind the scenes was deeply uncomfortable to witness. A tour director represents Tauck not only to guests but also to every local partner and service provider involved in the trip.
I recognize that leading a tour is demanding work. I also recognize that this was apparently her final tour of the season. However, neither circumstance excuses this conduct. Guests pay a premium for a Tauck experience and should not be expected to absorb a tour director’s frustration, lack of preparation, or apparent unwillingness to do the job.
What made this experience especially disappointing was that many of these situations could have been handled differently with basic courtesy and communication. A simple acknowledgment that things were not going smoothly, followed by a request to reset expectations or an offer to ask guests how she could help, would have gone a long way. Instead, her behavior made ordinary travel challenges unnecessarily stressful and created an atmosphere that no guest should have to endure.
We also found it absurd that guests were expected to complete written evaluations and hand them directly to the tour director. Given the nature of this experience, guests should have a straightforward, confidential way to provide feedback directly to Tauck without having to hand their comments to the very person they are evaluating.
We chose Tauck because we expected a high standard of service, organization, professionalism, and care. This experience did not meet that standard. The issue was not a mechanical problem with a train or the inevitable complications of travel. It was the tour director’s repeated behavior, her treatment of guests and staff, and her inability to manage situations professionally. She also did not speak the language which should have been a job requirement. And she did not download the SBB app. Which is Switzerland's train app. also a basic job requirement when using transport in Switzerland. Six of our tour members who had the app, had to tell her which train to get on after the mechanical issues, and she still got us on the wrong trian.
Of the three hotels, one was seriously subpar. Apparently, Tauck is changing out that hotel for 2027. They knew this hotel was an issue, and it is disappointing that they kept their contract with them for us at the end of 2026. This was the second hotel in Interlockin. It was dirty, the carpets were beyond gross. and no air (which I did no know before traveling although Tauck never said a word). Yes ,it is October, however even the chocolate melted in our room. Was the no air a big deal in October yes for a tour that claims to be higer end. And it is a fire hazzard. Old key locks are unique however no one suggested leaving them in the door over night. They should have god forbid there was a fire. The breakfast at this hotel was also subpar. Unclean utensils or no utensils on tables. First hotel was ok location could have been better, but the breakfast was amazing. It also had dirty bathrooms, especailly the common ones on the floor with the lobby. And a nightclub downstairs so depending on one's room that was two sleepless nights. The staff was lovely I will give them that. Third hotel Manderin Oriental, rooms not ready upon arrival after their check in time. Not sure whose fault that was. However there was no direction where to wait or for how long. Some guests waited hours for their rooms. Room not being ready was a minor complaint compared to the tour guide issue. Manderian's location was ok easy to walk to town or trains to travel back into Zurich.
I would like to say all the other guests on our tour were lovely and kind. Any communication issues were caused by the tour director. Even our bus driver and hotel staff were aware of the issues with the tour director.
Our itinerary was fine. Our transport were all fine ie bus, trains and airport transfers.
Lessons learned. Do not take an end of season tour as risk burned out tour directors. Although, their job is to finish the season. Review hotels Tauck uses carefully, if anything bothers you before leaving on the tour it's not the tour for you. Review what Tauck is responsible for once you are on the tour.
We hope Tauck takes this complaint seriously. A tour director has an enormous influence on the quality of a trip, and in this case, that influence was overwhelmingly negative. Guests deserve better, and so do the local staff and partners who help make these tours possible.
