Sam, who was your TD? We had Deanne Inman, she majored in Anthropology. She was beyond excellent!

  • Options

Mary - Our TD was Mitch Bloem. He's a native South African. He's fairly young, only been a Tauck TD for a couple of years. Prior to that he was a Ranger/Game Driver at Sabi Sabi for I believe 7 years. He was very personable and did a very good job.

Here's a picture of him, with my niece, from on top of Table Mountain in Cape Town.

I had Mitch on my Elegant Adventure last October. Very personable and efficient!

Thanks, Sam. This is one fabulous Tauck tour we'll always remember!

Smiling Sam - thx for sharing. great pix ! we are on the 9/11/26 Elegant Adventure. Arriving 3 days early. Any thoughts on casual restaurants near Cape Grace hotel anyone ? Considering the hop on hop off buses for overview of area.

  • Options

We took the Hop-on Hop-off Buses (Viator/Trip Advisor) all 3 routes leave at the same starting point near the Cape Grace Hotel. The tours were narrated and gave us a lovely perspective of Cape Town. Highly recommending the "Codfather"
fresh seafood restaurant which you can ask the bus driver to let you off. Casual, and serves lunch and dinner - excellent!

One of my top 5 trips ever! Have fun!

Thx MMM. others have mentioned Codfathers, so it's a go. The Hop on - off also offers harbor cruise and sunset bus ride. Do you do these two as well ? Did you wait until arrival in Capetown to book Hop on -off bus ? Thx again.

Crazy bit of info, we are leaving July 8 on "small" tour. Spoke to Tauck representative and was told we are only 8 confirmed ! Virtually a private tour....thanks for all the feedback. I will definitely look into hop on/off bus and the Codfather

    Cuzin GJ & JAKBLK:

We didn't add extra excursions on the Cape Town HopOn/Off Bus Tour voucher. We purchased online through Trip Advisor prior to our Cape Town arrival for $25 pp / unlimited touring - which allows a full refund for 24-hour cancellation prior to the tour. They have 3 different bus routes leaving close to the Cape Grace Hotel. It was a full day of exploration and pre-trip fun!

Viator.com also has the exact same booking information and terms.

Codfather's Seafood Restaurant is a must for lunch or dinner.

    Enjoy!

MMM. For about $53 US total for two - my wife and I can get 2 day hop on/off passes, which includes a harbor tour and sunset on the bus. Perfect for us, arriving 3 days early.

Great plan, Cuzin GJ! You'll enjoy every minute of this special trip!

Sam, fantastic pictures! Thank you so much! We leave next month and are confused and excited.

cuzin GJ - Any thoughts on casual restaurants near Cape Grace hotel anyone ?

We ate at a couple of different places near the Cape Grace, two were good and one just so-so.

The two good ones were: GINJA Restaurant and Baia Seafood Restaurant.

The just so-so restaurant was Ferryman's Irish Tavern.

Day 9 in Jo'burg we have dinner on our own. Any ideas for fun casual dining ? Not planning to walk at night there, but short Uber ride would work. Or is Fairlawns Hotel best dining option ? I see we have lunch in local restaurant that day. thx !

cuzin GJ - There is a free shuttle to/from the Nelson Mandela square and adjacent mall from the Fairlawns Hotel. We utilized the service and ate at a restaurant in the mall. There are lots of dining options between Nelson Mandela square and the mall.

We ate at a restaurant called - Second Story - Sandton City (in the mall) because they had pizzas on their menu and that is what we were looking for. It was casual dress.

As stated before, lots of options between the square and the mall to pick from.

If you eat at the same place we did, then here is the menu for the provided lunch in Johannesburg (we enjoyed it).

    cuzin GJ,
The Fairlawns Hotel has a lovely menu! We were cautioned not to wander (taking a walk) off the property, especially at night. We had an early dinner and got plenty of rest for the next day's excursions. Hope this helps!

Thx SS and MMM. I saw previous years the lunch that day in Jo’burg offered ample food ( hope it’s the same place ) . So splitting a casual pizza may work. Be smart to get a few folks to travel together for fellowship and safety. Appreciate the info.

One of the simplest things you can do to reduce Jed Luchances of pick pockets, snatchers etc is to not wear hex any jewelry on tours. I just don’t understand all the diamonds and Rolexes people wear on the tours. Leave them at home as advised by Tauck.
South Africa, especially Johannesburg is still the murder capital of the world.
Also, don’t pack valuables in your checked luggage. I was speaking to someone this morning who had her camera and four lenses taken from her checked luggage
