The Tauck 1930 Catalog reprint

I hope you all got the most recent Tauck catalog for 2025 along with the entertaining reprint of their 1930 catalog. Very interesting what's the same and what's different. One difference I noted was the luggage guidance on the last page.

"Guests are requested to confine their luggage to one traveling bag or suitcase due to the limited space of baggage compartments. An additional fee to cover porters' tips will be charged in advance for handling excess luggage. Baggage tags are furnished by conductor upon departure. The tour conductor supervises the transfer of luggage from hotel rooms."

I have to wonder when the guidance changed to eliminate the extra fee for tips or the conductor's (TD's) role in this.

When the tour price went up from 2 digits to 4 digits.

I received the catalog, very interesting, I noticed the same thing about the luggage and agree with BKMD, with tour prices we pay I can't see them charging more for an extra bag, I've never had one and don't intend to in the future. The more I travel, the less I pack

I used an online calculator to see how the 1930 prices compared to now. A 7 day tour for $98 in 1930 works out to $1845 now. Not sure what is included is comparable.

I do think maybe a fuller explanation of why 1 checked bag now would be good. At least the older guidance got across the point that your tour price only includes paying for staff to handle 1 bag.

Eleven suitcases is completely ridiculous and beyond the pale. When Harry took Meghan on safari for one of those early dates of theirs all she took was a backpack.

There are back packs and then there are BACK PACKS. On a recent trip I saw a young woman board with a BACK PACK that a sherpa couldn’t carry. It was so large it had to take up one entire overhead compartment. I was surprised they let her board with it as it was clearly not carry-on size luggage. It probably had more volume than my normal size checked suitcase.
