Electronic Travel Authorization Requirement When Flying Through LHR

My husband and I are booked on the Switzerland: Europe"s Crown Jewel tour which starts on June 13. We are flying from Greensboro, NC to CLT to LHR to Geneva. I am trying to determine if we need to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization because we are flying through LHR. Is there any reason we would need to go through immigration control when we arrive at LHR. If not, American Airlines says we would not need to get the ETA. I have not been able to get an answer from British Airways on this matter. I would appreciate anyone letting me know if you have had to get an ETA when flying through LHR to another European destination recently.

    Originally you needed one just. For flying through LHR but now you don’t

    The only reason, I can see you needing the authorization would be if you have any issues with your connections and end up spending time in London that necessitates you going out going out of the airport.

    I assume they won’t let you leave the airport unless you have the pass

    I had a problem with my flight and ended up having to spend the night near the airport You never know. So I would get one just in case

    If I were a betting man, I'd bet if you don't have an ETR but your connection flight is delayed a day, you can get special temporary paperwork so you can leave LHR for a hotel and return the next day to continue your journey. They will not ship you off to El Salvador, Sudan, or Guantanamo . . . . oh wait! :o

    The ETA is not very expensive, easy to apply for, and good for two years. It's a good thing to have in your travel kit.

    Remember that you’ll need the ETA arriving and then on the return, departing from England.

    Don't encourage gov't burocrats to annoy and fleece tourists needlessly. If you're just transiting through LHR, you don't need it.

    No, but I've always said that I want to pay lots and lots of taxes because it means that I'm making lots and lots of money :)
