Re: Michigan's Lakes and Mackinac Island
Our tour of the Great Lakes on Ponant’s Le Bellot, Chicago to Toronto began last night. We arrived at Chicago mid afternoon and the Tauck rep was ready and waiting to direct us to our driver. The drive into the city was an hour to the Fairmont hotel. Tauck had emailed us a couple of weeks before, warning us the check in was not until 4pm. It was 3-15pm but our room was ready. We just had time to quickly read our documents, fill in the paperwork required and head downstairs to meet the tour guides at their desk as they were due to finish up at 4pm.
The Welcome reception began at 6pm in the Fairmont. Those staying at the Four Seasons had been bused here. We have stayed at the Four Seasons before, so we knew it is further out and a large additional expense of several hundred dollars to stay there, the other choice for this tour.
We entered the reception room and tables were set out with the names of the five tour directors who will be on the tour. We had to choose one of the tables with the name of the TD’s we had met and been assigned earlier. There was more than one table for each of them. It looks as if the tour is full judging by the number of tables!
There was a jazz band playing as we all sat down, so it was extra difficult to even hear the person sitting next to you, but the band was excellent. A young ‘flapper’ sang All that Jazz’ and a male singer sang something, I can’t recall what. Later, a Motown singing group came on. Three men, one woman, they were excellent and at one point invited men to join them on stage to sing. My husband was up there in a flash! The women were encouraged to come up and dance, so I don’t have pictures of him. many people danced during the evening. We really enjoyed it.
The paperwork for the evening we received earlier, had said this was the time to dress up, there was a huge variety, jackets, plaid shirts, flowered shirts, collared T shirts and literally a sport jacket for the men. I saw one or two cocktail dresses on the women. Most wore pants with a whole variety of top types, floaty, shirts, colorful T shirts. I made note because so many people ask about attire.
We chose the sea bass entree, it was disgusting! A thin very over fried up piece of fish, two very burnt long thin carrots and a dollop of what was supposed to be risotto. The salad, dessert and wine were good.
The five tour directors talked a little about the tour, Two different times buses came for the Four Seasons people and the rest of us drifted out.
Our room is on the 21st floor, it’s large and comfortable.
Our first breakfast at the hotel was in a special Tauck room, pretty basic, bacon, fried potatoes, scrambled egg, yoghurt parfait, a few tiny croissant, pain au chocolat, tiny muffins, bread for toast. No fruit, no omelettes, no cereals—-and this is a Fairmont hotel. I wish I knew if the Four Seasons people were also in a different room with limited choices. I had to wait ages for more hot water for my tea, after a while, I asked another server, they were just standing around, I had to go up to them to ask. Then, the first sever arrived, the second one never came back. I just mention this because we have already met several people who this is their first Tauck tour, and it’s a very expensive tour. I’d like to think they will be impressed.

Re: recommended insect repellant for August - Picaridin vs Deet
No need to spray your coat. If you spray everything you wear thoroughly, you will require a huge amount of spray. When we use Premethrin we spray the openings of the garments, neck, armholes, leg holes.

Re: recommended insect repellant for August - Picaridin vs Deet
My project this weekend is to spray my safari clothes with Premethrin for the 9/13 Elegant Adventure. We also have packages of Repel wipes (30% Deet) to use on exposed skin. At this time of year, the only place I would expect to see mosquitoes is at Victoria Falls. Always best to be safe rather than sorry.

Beautiful photos.

Re: Rollaboard carryon
It would help to know which tour you are asking about as some of the luggage handling can be different. Ex: tours in Africa, tours with on tour flights, etc. Also the tour group size matters. Is this a Small group (24 or less) or Classic sized which can be up to 44 guests.
On European land tours I've found that the coach has one small area underneath that you can hand carry a piece down and pick it up to carry into the new hotel. You can also hand carry aboard the coaches small backpacks, totes, etc to put in the small overhead storage. They are smaller than most airplane overhead and there is no space under the seat in front of you.
On small group tours there is plenty of room under the coach and even in the empty back seats of the coach. On a classic sized tour it can get very crowded in most bring a full sized carryon rollaboard and there is no extra space on board for anything but small bags.
I understand the issue with problems carrying a large bag. I typically bring a smaller underseat carryon bag and a small purse/tote.
Those are sufficient for any essentials that can't be checked as well as some extra clothing in case my bag gets delayed.
The one checked bag limit is because there is a lot of work involved by the hotel staff, TD, and coach driver to round up all the bags in time, keep accurate records, carry them out to the coach and load them. All repeated in reverse at the next hotel. These people are paid based on one bag per guest. In addition, the daily schedule is set assuming a certain amount of time needed for this process. If it looks like it will take longer the TD will move up the time for everyone to get their bags ready for pick up.
Re: Rollaboard carryon
The suitcases are taken care of by Tauck, the day before departure to a new site the TD will let you know at what time to have the luggage ready either in your room or outside the door, it's picked up by the hotel's staff and placed in the bus or another vehicle. You are responsible to your carry on to bring downstairs and the coach driver will put it underneath for you if it doesn't fit above your seat in the coach.
Re: Rollaboard carryon
Your carryon can be stored in the luggage compartment of the bus, but you are responsible for handing it to the driver. They also advise to not ask for it when the bus stops. Once at the hotel, you are also responsible for carrying your carryon to your room.

Re: night tour of budapest
On our recent Budapest to the Black Sea cruise, on embarkation day, the ship didn't leave until almost dark. Then it sailed north past the parliament building, then turned around and headed south. We had a lovely relaxing view of all the lights on our way down river. For us, an additional private Budapest cruise would have been overkill.

Re: night tour of budapest
To me, Budapest at night is even more beautiful than Paris. We had a great meal at Baglyovar where we dined with a room full of locals, and we asked the cab driver for a tour of the significant illuminated sites on our return trip to the hotel. He took us to Heroes Square, the Chain Bridge and Parliament. He patiently waited while we got out and took photos. Have a wonderful experience in that historic city!
