Years ago we did independent travel to many of Mexico’s colonial cities. The country is very diverse with remarkable history, art, architecture and cuisine. I would not hesitate to go. I think I saw a review here on the forum. Use the search bar to verify.
Update - My cursory search did not find a review. The trip is new for this year.
We just went on the Tauck tour....Mexico City and Oaxaca. We thought it was GREAT! We never felt uncomfortable or unsafe even when we were on our own a few afternoons or dinners. We loved everything we saw. Old and new. Especially loved the ruins at Teotihacan and the walk in Oaxaca. There were a few issues with the food in that normally when Tauck takes you to a restaurant for dinner, you get to chose from the whole menu but on this trip that was not the case, you got to chose from a 3 course set menu with only 3 choices in each category. The tour is nw so hopefully that will change
Dinner menus vary on Tauck trips. I've been on some where you have a limited set menu as you describe and some where you can order off the entire menu. I doubt it's Tauck's doing, but the restaurant/hotel that decides.
Thanks Scubawife! We are going in February and welcome any tips! Saw your advice on Chapultepec Park and Castle in a general Mexico discussion on the forum. We were weighing that against walking around the historic center and Alameda on the day of the welcome dinner. You've convinced us to do the Park. Day 4 in Polanco- where did the bus drop you off? Do you recommend museo Soumayo or Lincoln Park?
January 22, 2026 NYTimes- 36 hours in Mexico City article. I don't think the tour has much free time in Mexico City. You'll definitely need extra days to explore more.
I have fond memories of Mexico City. I went there by train with friends in 1973 and we all went to a bullfight. We ate some food from a street vendor and all got Montezuma's revenge. It was a tough couple of days for all of us.
But then we recovered and enjoyed the city. Ah, youth - it's inflicted on the young.
We are a group of 30. For today,s tour of teotihuacan, we were divided into groups of 10. We returned to the hotel and dropped off our jackets etc. then the bus took us to polanco (arrived around 1:30). Many opted to have lunch and return on the bus at 3:30. For those who wanted to go to the soumaya museum, our TD arranged for an uber from the bus drop off point. There was a bit of a line to get in. We headed back on our own for the 5 pm dessert demo. Way too many samples of traditional baked goods and sweets. Definitely use uber rather than other forms of transportation. St Regis is very comfortable. Fabulous breakfast buffet and menu options. Huge portions. We start most days at 8 or 8:30. The schedule is quite full.
Started at the diego Rivera museum. Two groups of 15. There were folding chairs to sit on while learning about one mural. On our way to the zocalo, we were blocked by a military parade at the presidential palace. We did get to the zocalo, but tour of the cathedral and templo mayor were scratched. There were 3 options for lunch in a cute restaurant which was only occupied by our group. Our visit tonight will be about 1 hour after hours at the museum of anthropology followed by dinner in polanco. one glass of wine will be included!
