Curious to know if the wild fires affected any of the tours this season, such as itinerary changes, walking excursions, dining, etc? TYIA.

Hi inlanikai, I am on the Grand Canadian Rocky tour now and unfortunately the wildfires are affecting us. Our train ride from Vancouver to Jasper had to be cancelled, so we traveled by bus to Kamloos for an overnight at a nice Delta hotel, and then arrived in Jasper the next day. There was some smoke, but not unbearable. I live in upstate NY and before we left, we had smoke at home. Our tour director is great and making the best out of the trip. The scenery is still beautiful and everything else fantastic. Tauck advised us that they will be giving us some money back after the trip is completed. We were told that we actually the scenery on the bus is better because part of the train ride is during the night and part of the train ride is all trees. I am disappointed about the train, but we have to be safe.

The other thing I should add is that the wildfire situation is very fluid. The fires can be out of control one day and then under control the next day so it’s very unpredictable.

Hi Susan, thanks for the update. I live on Long Island so we did not get the smoke as bad as you upstate. Although two years ago it was pretty bad down here. Sorry to hear the train ride had to be cancelled but, as usual, Tauck is good at making alternative arrangements on tour. Enjoy the tour!

I was on Tauck tours in Canada two different summers, two different parts of the country experiencing wildfires. While we couldn't get to Jasper, Tauck made up for it in other ways. We stayed in Banff for 4 nights instead of two and that was wonderful! Tauck added all kinds of activities that weren't on the original itinerary. During the previous summer while on the Capital Cities itinerary, US cities were being bombarded by smoke and we had clear skies in Canada with no wildfire effects. It all depends on which way the wind is blowing.

I'm scheduled to start the Best Of Western Canada and Rocky Mountaineer tour this coming Sunday. I have been checking the Rocky Mountaineer web site and scheduled runs on that route have been cancelled for at least fsince July 23 because of fire... So things are not looking so good for next week right now... and we chose that tour for the train ride... Well fingers crossed but it does not look good right now!
