Shipping Luggage to India

I generally ship my luggage to my hotel using a luggage handling company. However, It appears as if many luggage handling companies will not ship luggage to India due to the complex and bizarre customs arrangements imposed. Apparently even personal effects require a huge range of forms and duty permits.

Has anyone had any success in shipping their luggage directly to India from the US?

I have been in contact with FedEx, DHL, UPS, and the USPS. The complexities of the customs forms for India are daunting. I have several stops whilst en route from the US to India and I would prefer not to have my tour suitcases with me.

I am also posting on the India boards but thought this might reach a broader audience of past India travelers.

    Pack light for India tour. Wear comfortable clothes. We did the Spotlight tour in October and did total carry-on going to India. On the tour you will get a duffle bag that is huge (we fit our carry-on's in the duffle).

    If your worried about losing luggage - just pack what you need for a day or two in a carry-on on your way out. The duffle bag you get while there will be needed for checking on way home for things you will buy and things you may be given during the tour!
