What to do before tour begins/after tour ends?

(1) We will be joining the Essence of Japan Tour on Sept 4th. We will be in Osaka on Sept 3rd. Any suggestions for something to do prior to our 6:30 Welcome Reception?
(2) We will be in Tokyo for one day post-tour. Same question: any suggestions for a one day activity?
