going through customs in South Africa

My husband and I are taking the April 26 South Africa: An Elegant Adventure tour. When we read the South African customs regulations, it implies we are required to pay a duty deposit of 20% on any item valued at more than R3000 (about $326.00 US dollars) when we arrive in South Africa, this is refundable with advance notice when leaving the country. My question, have other travelers been required to pay this deposit if they are traveling with cameras or binoculars valued more than R3000? Thank you for any respond. We would also enjoy hearing from anyone else booked on the April 26 tour.

  • Hello traveler115,

I checked around and also with the Product Manager for our Africa tours we have never heard of anyone having to pay a duty deposit.

    Hope this helps,
    Emily
  • Kay, where are you flying from? We are flying Delta-Dayton-Atlanta-Johannesburg-Cape Town. We look forward to meeting you. Donna
