Danube Christmas Market River Cruise

My husband and I are going on the upcoming Danube Christmas Market River Cruise leaving from Nurnberg. We are arriving three days prior to departure and would like to do a day trip to Rothenburg o.d. Tauber. We are not sure of the best option of transportation, but the train appears more efficient. However, we have never taken the train and are concerned about the transfers. I am hoping that someone on the Christmas Market trip(s) might be able to help!
