According to the descriptions of the Tauck river fleet, there are safes in each cabin. I wouldn't think leaving your passport in these safes would be any different than leaving them in a hotel room safe. My wife and I always have a photocopy of our own, and each others passports, when we leave hotels or cruise ships. We'll be doing the same on our upcoming French Waterways and Vineyards river cruise.
