Barcelona St. Jordi's Day

Northern Spain, Barcelona to Porto
The first full day of the tour in Barcelona is Sant Jordi's Day; Feast of St. George. I'm wondering how this will affect our tour. Now I am very happy that I am going with Tauck because I know they will have a plan. We are scheduled to tour Basílica de la Sagrada Família and drive through Montjuic. Does anyone know where this part of the day will end?

  • Sounds like fun to me, please post a review when you return, we are going next year.

    AI Overview

Sant Jordi’s Day (Saint George's Day) is celebrated annually in Barcelona on April 23rd as a deeply romantic, cultural, and festive "Day of Books and Roses". Streets, particularly La Rambla and Passeig de Gràcia, fill with stalls selling books and red roses, while popular landmarks like Casa Batlló are adorned with roses.
    Key Aspects of the Celebration:
The Tradition: Based on the legend of Saint George slaying a dragon to save a princess, lovers, family, and friends exchange books and roses.
The Atmosphere: Often described as a Catalan Valentine's Day combined with World Book Day (which falls on the same date).
Key Locations: Key areas for stalls and activities include La Rambla, Rambla de Catalunya, and Passeig de Gràcia.
Cultural Activities: The day features book signings by authors, public sardana dances, and human towers (castells).
Special Events: While not a public holiday, it is a massive, lively street event with many, including bookstores, open. It is a great time to visit attractions, some of which may have special access

  • We did Barcelona on our own as an add-on to the Spain/Portugal land tour and arrived on Sant Jordi’s day in 2024. The traffic was terrible with some of the streets closed. The taxi driver from the airport had to try multiple different routes and still was only able to get us to within three or four blocks of our hotel near La Rambla. We had to roll our somewhat heavy suitcases the rest of the way.

Once we got over the aggravation though, we were glad we got to see the festivities. I’m sure Tauck will adjust as necessary.
