I went on a different Italy trip last year, and while it's not exactly the same thing, I had no problem using a standard swipe credit card. However, there are many places in smaller towns and cities where credit cards are not accepted, particularly in smaller shops, so it's always a good idea to have a supply of euros on you. However, ATMs are available all over the place, and you shouldn't have any trouble getting money if you need it.
