Costa Brava area or northern Spain

We are doing the Spain and Portugal tour in May. So thrilled to be going with Tauck once again.
We plan to stay on a week after the tour and were thinking of staying near Girona, which is just north of Barcelona.
As the tour ends in Madrid, We are thinking we'd take the train to Girona and stay somewhere in that area. We plan to take day trips from there.
Does anyone have any information on that area that would be helpful? Would there be enough to see and do?
I'd appreciate any comments.
