Dress Code

This will be our first River Cruise, going from Budapest to Amsterdam in September of 2016, and I enjoyed the forum on how to pack light. My question is....what do people generally wear on the boat for dinner? Also, we are scheduled to go to a palace for dinner one night....what is the dress code for that? We have enjoyed big ship cruising in the past so I am wondering if the dress code is similar?

  • You will have a great time. I have done 2 riverboat cruises and on ship it is casual dining. Would not wear jeans or shorts to dinner. I usually take one nice pair of pants and several tops that go with it. For the castle and last night of tour people usually dress up a little.
  • Thanks for the reply! I thought the dress would be like our other cruises, but wanted to be sure. We are really excited to try a different type of cruising and I really love Germany ????
  • Just finished the wonderful Prague to Budapest Danube cruise, my first river cruise and first Tauck tour. Definitely slacks, knit dresses/skirts, and one pair of heels seemed to do the trick for the women. A pashmina or scarf is a lightweight way to change up a look - no one cares if your Sunday attire repeats a few days later. The castle dinner in Prague we were advised to avoid heels and that was a smart call - lots of cobblestones plus long stone stairs down after the event (tho I'm certain special help was provided for those unable to make the trek by foot)

Did this tour with just a 21 pound carry on, never checked luggage =;) and that included 3 different dinner outfits, workout wear, 4 pair shoes.

September weather surprised many of us. Most expected cooler weather and we had 80-plus degree days in Bratislava and Budapest, despite checking the extended weather forecasts right before final pack and departure that seemed to indicate mid 70s at best. Glad i brought a golf skort and sleeveless tops.

This is a magical trip with superb staff and directors - you will love it!
